Dry Coconut: Naariyal in Hindi

Hey Friends! In my last article, I promise you all that we will discuss coconut in two parts first is Tender coconut and the other one is Dry Coconut. As per my words in my article we discussed tender coconut, now the turn is for dry coconut. So let’s start about dry coconut.

Coconut is the fruit that our long generations are using for our all needs. It can be for hair, skin, meal or pooja (worship) anything we Indians search for the coconut Why? Oh! I have the answer…in India, anything happens like any Marriage, Baby Birth, Name Ceremony, any welcoming pooja (like bought a new car, starting a new company, staring house construction, new bridal is coming home, house worming pooja, etc..) we break the coconut. In cooking also we use lots of coconut in daily meals chutney curry, gravy, desserts, candy for kids, etc.. Again we need coconut. Any beauty problems, no worries, we use coconut oil and coconut milk, it can be for hair or your skin, again we need coconut. Now I hope you all got to know the importance of coconut for an Indian.

Coconut is a highly nutritious and holy fruit and coconut butter is good to reduce Vata Dosha. Coconut hydrates the skin and makes it youthful and supple. Take raw, uncooked coconut oil and massage the skin with it. This will minimize the skin disease, rashes, and irritations and will beautify the skin from inside when taken internally. Its antioxidant property works as anti-aging by protecting the body from harmful free radicals. Apply daily virgin coconut oil on the hands to get beautiful and smooth hands. Coconut regularly boosts oxygen in the skin and promotes blood circulation. This allows proper breathing of the skin and promotes healthy and flawless complexion. Apply coconut oil water or milk with your homemade face pack by mixing half a teaspoon of turmeric, 1 teaspoon of sandalwood powder, twice weekly to get a tan-free skin. Coconut can also be used as a body scrub. Mix some coconut oil and a cup of brown sugar and stir well and use it ones a week.

Coconut can also help you to get shiny and silky hair. Massage your hair with coconut water or coconut oil this will also make the hair soft, smooth and manageable. Antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut protect the scalp from dandruff, lice and itchy scalp.

Dry coconut nutritional value is varied by the part of the fruit consumed: A 1/3-cup serving of coconut kernel is high in fiber content as well as significant amounts of iron and potassium. In spite of being high in saturated fat, coconut is cholesterol-free and low in sodium. Coconut can also help to alleviate acidity and heartburn problems. Regularly use of coconut supports the development of healthy bones and teeth. It improves the ability to absorb calcium and manganese which aid bone development.

Coconut helps to increase energy by burning fat. It also supports healthy thyroid function and helps to relieve from chronic fatigue symptom. Fiber-rich coconut kernel aids in digestion. It can help to control your blood sugar and cholesterol and keeps you full for longer. Adding dry coconut in your daily meal is not just to enhance the taste but also helps to lose your weight. Eating more fiber helps lower your risk of stroke and high blood pressure. Coconut has Selenium, which may help to protect from heart disease and other illnesses, such as colon and cervical cancer. Many people have heard about coconut oil for memory loss and other Alzheimer’s symptoms and wonder about its effectiveness.

How to Consume:
You can have homemade Low sugar chocolate coconut balls. The recipe is for Low sugar chocolate coconut balls so simple, in this recipe you can use coconut milk, shredded coconut and also coconut oil, and for a detailed recipe, you can follow the mentioned instructions.

Low sugar chocolate coconut balls:

Ingredients: 1 high-quality chocolate bar with the highest cocoa content you can find (approximately 3.5 ounces). For lower sugar content, use unsweetened baking chocolate and add stevia or xylitol to suit your taste. Cocoa, shredded coconut, or finely chopped nuts for coatings, 1 teaspoon organic almond extract, 3 tbs organic coconut oil, ¼ cups organic coconut milk at room temperature.

Instructions: Just melt the chocolate either in a double boiler or in the microwave. Melt the coconut oil separately. Combine the chocolate and coconut. While the mixture is warm, mix in the coconut milk and almond extract. Freeze the mix for 2 to 4 hours, and then let thaw for 5 minutes. Scoop out about a tablespoon of the mixture and form into a ball. You can use a melon baller, too. Pour your coating onto a plate and roll the ball until it is covered. See so simple, now just call your friend and family to enjoy your mouth watering chocolate coconut balls…Awesome…

Recipe to reduce Vata Dosha:

Ingredients: 1 cup unsweetened almond milk/tablespoons pumpkin puree / 1 teaspoon coconut butter / 1 date, pitted and soaked / 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon / 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger / Pinch of ground nutmeg / 1/2 teaspoon ashwagandha powder

In a small pot, set over low heat, warm the almond milk until just barely simmering. Remove from the heat and transfer to the container of a high-speed blender. Add the remaining ingredients and blend on high until completely smooth. Serve warm.

Tip: Coconut butter completely solid and stubborn to grind. You will want to warm the jar to soften the butter before you start the rest of your ingredients ready, otherwise, your warm milk will get cold and you will have to start all over again.

Make Healthy Mayonnaise:

Commercial mayonnaise mostly used soybean oil and added sugar. However, it’s easy to make your mayonnaise just replace soybean oil with coconut oil or olive oil.

In Maharashtra, the very famous chutney is dry red chili and garlic chutney, and green chili Thecha (mashed green chili and garlic with coconut and peanuts) in this both we use coconut as an ingredient. In south India, coconut chutney served with Idli/dosa items this chutney is wet with curd.

You can consume coconut as curry, chutney (dry chutney or the wet chutney), gravy, candy, desserts (like laddu and candy), and backed items like bread, cakes, and cookies.

How to Store:

Dry Coconut can be stored for 6 to 12 Months, if it is packed in an airtight container and kept in the refrigerator.
